After a long hiatus, I’ve decided to bring my blogging days back to full swing. If it goes well, I might even have the chance to start reviewing gadgets FOR FREE and even post it in YouTube.

With a slew of new gadgets coming out this 2010 – like the Google Nexus One and Apple iPad just to name a few, before I start digging into these, I might as well pick up where I left off.

Here we go…

Sometime last, last year, Apple released the iPhone 3G. A chuck full of new features compared to its granddaddy, the iPhone 2G. But with a heck a lot of cheaper parts, if you ask me. I didn’t mind it as much since I had my eyes set on the Palm Pre (I had the Palm Treo 680 for 3 years and never had any problems so why not upgrade to the same brand.) and with my review of the 2G, I felt that Apple could not entice me that easily.

But Apple had other things in mind and with the release of the Palm Pre, they sooner released the iPhone 3Gs with BIG features like CUT-AND-PASTE and MMS (wooooooooooh! sense the sarcasm here?) and they claim that it’s much, much faster than the 3G (I’m assuming the “s” stands for SPEED) yet I didn’t seem to mind.

Jay, my brother-in-law, was much of a gadget freak as I was yet he was sold to everything Apple and could not wait to get his own iPhone 3Gs, which he got for Christmas. Which gave me enough play time to see what’s with the hype.

As expected, my excitement died after playing around with it for a few days not seeing much use of it except for the pretty cool apps like Tap Tap Revenge and Doodle Jump to name a few.

My niece had the iPhone 3G and with both units at home, I was able to do a comparison of both the 3G and 3Gs. The 3Gs is surprisingly much, much faster than the 3G. You know how it is that you never knew you appreciated something better until you’ve seen it for yourself? That’s how I felt with the 3Gs. The 3G was fine and all but after playing around witht he 3Gs, I feel bad now that my niece has the 3G and how much slower it was.

Without needed to go into detail, I would basically pick up where I left off with my rating with the 3G and give it 4.5 GWAPOINTS for better speed and better speed only.

Cons:
The beach itself had gray sand and you had to walk at least 30 feet from the shore before you could start feeling a little cool on the feet.
The short road from the pavement to the beach itself was undeveloped and a little rain could turn the trip from an off-road adventure to a A Real Life Gran Turismo experience.

Here’s the price list of the cabins we rented:
Airconditioned Cabin with toilet and bath – P4,800/night. (the toilet rarely worked)
Non-airconditioned bamboo Cabin with no toilet and bath – P2,800/night.

This place is not barkada-friendly for those quick trips under a budget. It’s not even family friendly because the only few (actually, 2) comfortable rooms are always occupied. The sand is gray with your occasional stones and sharp rocks.

I give it 1 GWAPOINTS. (sorry, my conscience could not give it any point but the scoring only allows 1 to 5. *sigh*

You’re better off going to Zambales.

Last March, I rated the Apple iPhone and gave it 3 Gwapoints. Me being a very geeky person, I expected more from a mobile device. The iPhone (2G) had almost everything else, but the basics, hmmm.. not quite.

It’s like buying a Nokia phone to find that it does not have SMS Capabilities. The iPhone has Bluetooth but not the functionality of file transfer via bluetooth. (aaaargh!) So I decided to wait for a while and see if Apple will release something to make up for the mistake I’d like to call iPhone.

July 11, 2008, Steve Jobs decided to give everybody a big *sigh* and released the iPhone 3G. It’s basically an iPhone with the capability to connect to the Internet via a 3G network.

Hehehehe.. nah.. it has a little more features than that.

It has GPS, Wi-Fi (as a standard) BUT NO FREAKIN‘ BLUETOOTH FILE TRANSFER AND MMS.

The nice thing about the iPhone OS, though, is that all it needs is an APP and a certain feature will be activated. I wonder how long will it take before Apple realizes that people, in general, are social people and the little things that they take for granted can ultimately be the things that can put them down.

It is obviously a fad because shortly after it’s release, Palm came up with the Palm Treo Pro (a different review altogether)

I held one of the 3G units owned by a friend and it is true what Steve Jobs said, about it feeling great in the hand. Because compared to the iPhone 2G, the iPhone 3G feels heavier and fits more comfortably on your hand.

Other than the looks and feel of the unit, with the missing basic functions, I’d not give it 3 Gwapoints, but 4 GWAPOINTS. Work harder, Apple. You have a good product, it just needs to be reviewed by people who actually use mobile phones.

When the Apple iPhone was announced, it immediately caused a stir in the mobile phone industry with all the bells and whistles this baby WILL carry most of which are too good to be true. I mean, that much power in such a small package?? Come ON!!

But then again, the device will not be released by just any company. We’re talking about Apple here, folks. 1997 was the year of the Apple when Steve Jobs came back and led the revolutionary “i” market with the iMac, iPod, iBook, so on and so forth and I feel that whatever Steve Jobs would think of, it would definitely be a good product, no doubt about that.

So for the past 2 years, many people have claimed to have seen this “IPHONE” which should be an iPod with phone features. Same to how Smartphones are PDA’s with phone features.

Anyway, this type of marketting strategy was cheap but VERY effective.

ANYWAY!!! To cut the long story short, hundreds upon hundreds of unlockediPhone were suudenly made available in the Philippines long before the rumorred January 2008 release. And it’s still not officially here. Damn!!

My brother was given an iPhone as a Christmas gift who he lovingly gave to his wife after 2 or more cigarettes thinking whether he should surrender the thing or not and today, I was lucky enough to get a hold of one.

Well, not exactly, last Tuesday, Magoo showed me his iPhone where he got really cheap somewhere in Alabang. Since he onnly stayed at the place where I was for a short time, I was not able to play around with it.

Going back to the story. My sister-in-law showed me her iPhone and my brother asked me if I can tinker with the unit to see if I can make some of the things work. (NOTE that since the iPhone has not officially been released yet, OTA (Over-The-Air) settings for any network has not been fixed yet.) but since I used to work at Technical Support for Palm, setting it up manually should be a cinch.

Since we use Globe Telecom as our provider, and I’m using a Palm Treo 680, it is pretty easy to extract the settings from the Treo to try and apply it to the iPhone. Unfortunately, my sister’s SIM card has not been set up for GPRS nor MMS and going back to my previous paragraph, OTA settings would be useless.

Can’t remember precisely (but when I see Camille, I’ll take note of the steps I did and get back to you on that if the settings are wrong), but on the iPhone I went to SETTINGS > PHONE > NETWORK >SETTINGS.

Then for the following questions, here is the data I provided (these are similar steps when we manually placed the data for the Palm Treo 750):
APN: internet.globe.com.ph
USERNAME: globe
PASSWORD: globe

Tried connecting to the web and the “EDGE not set up on this phone” message came up. To find out that my sister’s SIM has not had GPRS or MMS set up yet. So we had to use my SIM to really find out if the settings were correct.

We had to look for a blasted paper clip to get the SIM tray out of the iPhone before anything else.
Nice thing about the iPhone is that you do not need to turn the unit OFF then ON to have the phone detect the SIM, so on the step alone, I was impressed.

Launching SAFARI on the device automatically brought us to the YAHOO website ay an impressive speed.

Other than trying to look for how to setup the INTERNET for the iPhone, oveall, only GEEKS would enjoy this. Laymen would get the iPhone for Wi-Fi, Internet and not the basic phone features like GPRS/EDGE or MMS.

What sucks though is the way some applications are set up. For example, the way we understand the HOME screen is where everything else is easily accessible. Contacts is not one of them? Why? I do not know.

Still, I’d give this Apple iPhone 3 GWAPOINTS.

A few years ago, a friend wabted to put up a site where in people can just post their opinions, complaints, or comments on a location. They would rate it in terms of POGI POINTS. Basically, most of the comments should be negative for the establishment to be noticed. Once the administrators of PP get enough data, they then compile this and send them to the establishment in topic and probably expect a positive response.

Good cause but the site didn’tpush through. POGIPOINTS.com because a free mail site that would give you 2MB of mailbox space for free.

Now I am thinking of continuing the legacy. But since I don’t have enough mullah to fund anofficial site, I decided to house this here, for now.

Unfortunately, POGIPOINTS.blogspot.com has already been taken so the closest would be GWAPOINTS.

I choose a location, a thing, a dish, basically anything that I have experienced and will give my beefs, rants, or raves; Giving it GWAPOINTS based on my overall experience.

If you have anything that you would want me to try out. Send me an email at ebzster@gmail.com and I will gladly try it out. Or if you have the soul to give me an item to try, I will be more than willing to oblige.
